CUSD SUPERINTENDENT OFFERS BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FOR FAMILIES
Suggestions Offered to Help Students Succeed
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO—Capistrano Unified School District Superintendent Joe Farley today offered parents his Top Ten Back-to-School tips.
“As we welcome students back to the classroom, I urge parents to make sure their children are prepared for the school year,” Farley said. “The following tips will make the transition back to school easier for both students and their parents.”
CUSD students return to school on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.
Farley’s Top 10 Tips
- Have high expectations for your child academically and behaviorally.
- Become involved and engaged at your child’s school. For tips on parent involvement, please visit the National PTA website.
- Develop a regular pattern that includes time for sleep, play, and homework.
- Meet and communicate regularly with your child’s teacher and principal. For tips, please visit the National PTA website.
- Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast before heading to school each day. While it is easier to keep track of our younger children’s eating habits, we also need to monitor the diets of our older students. For more information, please see the new federal dietary guidelines.
- Read to, and with, your children on a regular basis.
- Help make classroom lessons relevant by encouraging your children to put their knowledge to work in the real world. Let them help you cook a family meal, balance the family budget, or help you write an e-mail to relatives.
- Make sure your students’ immunizations are up to date. New state law mandates students entering grades 7 to 12 have proof of the Tdap booster shot given after the seventh birthday. Ensuring your child is current with his or her vaccinations helps keep the entire community safe and healthy. For more information, please visit the Shots for School website.

10. While we appreciate the donations that help enhance the education our children receive, please remember that your child is guaranteed a free public education. The District has developed a set of guidelines to ensure that no child is charged a fee for their participation in an educational program.
