Alexandria, VA — California’s Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens will receive recognition at the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) Annual Conference being held June 26-30, 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim California.
Sheriff Hutchens, a career law enforcement official, will be recognized as Host Sheriff of the NSA’s 70th Annual Conference and for the agency’s work in assisting victims of domestic violence and exemplary work in asset forfeiture cases.
In her capacity as Sheriff of Orange County, Sheriff Hutchens is responsible for the executive management of the 5th largest Sheriff’s Department in the United States with approximately 4,000 sworn and professional employees. The Sheriff’s Department provides patrol services to over 670,000 individuals within twelve contract cities and 350 square miles of unincorporated area. In addition, SWAT, Bomb Squad and Search and Rescue services are provided for all 3.2 million Orange County residents and for other county police agencies requesting assistance. Transit Police Services are provided through contract to the Orange County Transportation Authority. Security and Law Enforcement Services are provided through similar agreements to the County Court System and John Wayne Airport. Marine Fire Protection and Marine Rescue Services are provided to the three Orange County harbors under contract to Harbors, Beaches and Parks.
Included in the Sheriff’s Administration are oversight responsibilities for countywide Forensic Science Services, Coroner Investigations, Regional Training Academy and a Correctional Services Component that manages the 8th largest mega-jail in the U.S. In addition, the Sheriff is responsible for countywide Communications and Emergency Management. All of these general and specialized services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, underwritten by a budget of over $680,000,000.
The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) is one of the largest associations of law enforcement professionals in the United States, representing more than 3,000 sheriffs across the nation, and a total membership of over 22,000. NSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among sheriffs, their deputies, and others in the field of criminal justice and public safety. Throughout its seventy year history, NSA has served as an information clearinghouse for sheriffs, deputies, chiefs of police, other law enforcement professionals, state governments and the federal government. NSA also provides management training for sheriffs and their command personnel at the National Sheriffs’ Institute and through other innovative programs, workshops, and seminars. The National Sheriffs' Association, located in Alexandria Virginia also oversees the highly successful Triad Program and Neighborhood Watch.
